Bretazenil(Ro16-6028) is an anxiolytic, anti-anxiety drug of the benzodiazepine class (imidazo pyrrolo benzodiazepine), first developed in 1988. The structure of bretazenil is similar to flumazenil, but has slightly different pharmacological properties and is a partial agonist of GABA receptors. Bretazenil has been proposed as a possible basis for creating a better social drug, a proposal put forward by David Nutt from the University of Bristol, since this drug has fewer side effects when used pharmacologically (relaxation and sociability, but without bad effects like aggression, loss of coordination, amnesia, nausea). This drug is less addictive, unlike full benzodiazepine agonists. But bretazenil has never been commercialized and has not found use in medicine and is available as a designer drug for research purposes.
